'The Dagger Division'
Donated By
L/Cpl. William Joseph Lowe 14640525.

When I grow old and my heart goes cold
The hairs on my head few.
I can look back on my life, amid the Burma strife
And tell a tale or two.

I can look back on my life, amid the Burma strife
And tell a tale or two.

So buy me a beer and bring up a chair
And a tale or two I will tell,
Of the famous dagger division and the job they did so well.

They called them “India’s Home Guard”
But they knew there would come a day,
When they would show the world their mettle,
On the road to Mandalay.

The Welsh, the Berks, the Worcesters & Johnny Gurka
To Sikh, Baluch and Assams, all shows their colours true.

They drove the Japs from Schwebo
In a fight for right and peace,
Commanded by their leader, the gallant General Rees
And when they crossed the Irrawaddy
Was their toughest nut to crack.

It was hell and it was bloody but they drove the devils back Yes they drove the yellow devils from Schwego to Mandalay, And when they took Fort Dufferin was their greatest day.

The wireless screamed the victory of the fall of Mandalay,
So all you kind people spare a thought at times,
For those young men who fought and fell,
On the road to Mandalay.
