U.K. RELEASE SCHEMES
CLASS "A"

......On arrival at the M.D.C.U., personnel would have their kit inspected and all bar following items would have been withdrawn:

......Battledress 1
......Gloves 1 Pr.
......Boots 1 Pr.
......Housewife 1
......Cap & Badge 1
......Jersey 1
......Kit Bag 1
......Shirts 2
......Braces 1 Pr.
......Socks 2 Prs.
......Identity discs 1 Pr.
......Titles 1 Set.
......Under clothing 2 Sets.
......Towels 2
......Greatcoat, knife, fork and spoon.
......Cleaning Kit.

......No pay was given to O.Rs except where absolutely necessary, officers however were allowed to cash cheques up to £5. Personnel did not always go to the M.D.U. they expect. Here they were handed an, Unemployment book, Health Insurance book and a Temporary/Permanent Ration card, Clothing coupons, Identity card.
......Ptes. received £9, W.Os and N.C.Os, sums according to their rank, this was to cover them for three weeks, credits were forwarded in approximately 14 days. Gratuity Pay was about £70 upon discharge from the forces.

Each man was also supplied with “demob” clothing as follows:-

......One suit of clothes.
......One shirt.
......Two shirt collars.
......One hat.
......One pair shoes.
......One pair socks.
......One raincoat.
......One tie.

......The quality of the clothing was very good, but as one soldier said, “I couldn't get a suite to fit and I didn’t want to wait for ten to fifteen weeks for one so I went home in my uniform”.

......Some men handed in their greatcoat and some kept them, personnel also bought rations from the NAAFI, i.e.

......220 Plays Cigarettes
......100 Woodbine Cigarettes
......8 Ozs. Sweet

......Total cost £1-2s-11d.

......In London, Regents Park, M.D.U. theatre tickets could be purchased.

......After leaving the M.D.C.U., personnel were sent to a unit and arrangements were made for the following items to be issued:-

......Civilian clothes.
......Unemployment book.
......Health insurance book.
......Temporary ration card.
......Pay.

......Also an information booklet explaining how personnel should apply for:-

......Civil identity card.
......Permanent ration card.
......Clothing coupons.
......Medical attention.

......They were then released by O.C. Unit and were allowed 21 days leave receiving full pay and allowances.
......During this period they were required to report to the previous employer, or Ministry of Labour within the first 7 days.

PYTHON

......Python personnel were separated into parent draft units, and marched off the ship to specially assigned trains.
......On arrival at their Receiving Units, they were documented, received warrants, ration cards, pay, and NAAFI cigarettes, coupons etc.
......Their kit was also inspected. They were to leave the same day or the following day depending on their time of arrival at the unit. From there personnel would be sent on leave and arrangements for further pay was made by the depot, returning to the unit on their expiry date. LIAP was 28 days and personnel on Liap, left directly from the Port or Air Transit Centre (London); their leave did not commence until they left the Transit Centre, which was a stay of approximately 8 hours from their time of arrival.

......The transit camp officials issued them with:-

......Return Railway Warrant to their homes.
......28 days worth of Ration Cards.
......Cigarettes and sweets, (NAAFI).
......Coupons to purchase six handkerchiefs (O.Rs only).
......14 days pay (O.Rs only).
......Also any essential clothing (O.Rs. only).

......Upon return (India) personnel would have automatically rejoined their former unit or appointment unless they fell into the below categories:-

They belonged to the RAPC, in which case they reported to, Deputy Paymaster in Chief MEERUT.
They were an AEC, in which case, would report to the Army School of Education PACHMARI.
Or have received a posting order.

LILOP

......LIOP, was dealt with in much the same manner as LIAP, and about this time the War Office was expected to change the procedures and personnel would be sent into transit camps and not receiving units. If personnel were of the rank of Lt.-Col., they were sent a transit camp instead of receiving unit.
